The Innovators Network, developed by employees for Veterans, is a safe space for VA employees to test new ideas, and join forces with stakeholders across the Veteran community to improve the way VA serves Veterans.

“We have no hope of improving the Veteran experience unless we improve the employee experience. We must enable and empower employees to better care for Veterans. Innovation is how we improve the way we improve Veterans' lives.”

– Secretary Bob McDonald

"We currently have VA Innovators Network sites at 33 VA Medical Centers across the US. A new capability called an Innovation Specialist is located at each site to lead the charge for each facility to develop a culture of innovation."

Innovation is not just ideas.

It’s the conversion of a new idea into impact, whether it be for employees or for our customers.

We are Veteran-Centered.

Solving problems effectively requires a relentless commitment to prioritizing the needs of Veterans over the needs of the agency.

Test small, fail small, scale big.

Testing new ideas / products / processes on a small scale prevents the VA from committing resources on a large scale to things that don’t work.

Innovation is most valuable when it is shared.

We are not solving problems for any one VA site—we are solving problems for an entire community.

The VA Innovators Network hope to motivate and accelerate innovation culture across the VA system to best serve Veterans and their supporters.

We are excited to announce a new platform to address VA system-level challenges called the Spark-Seed-Spread Innovation Funding Program. This funding program allows facilities to both learn innovation-related competencies, such as Human Centered Design, and gain access to “funding + support” enabling innovation efforts!

The tiered funding concept supports projects at three levels:

  • 1. ‘Spark’ grants support proof of concept projects.
  • 2. ‘Seed’ grants support pilot projects.
  • 3. ‘Spread’ grants support implementation or scaling the project.
